One Ice Melt Line. Five Formulas. Down to -25°F.
Snow Shield™ from Chemical Equipment Labs is a CMA-enhanced de-icer built to melt hard and treat your surfaces better than straight rock salt. Pick your color: each one tells you which formula you are holding and lets you see exactly where you have spread. 50 lb bags, ships same day from our NJ warehouse.
Why Snow Shield™, and Not Just Rock Salt
Plain rock salt is cheap for a reason: it stops working around 20°F, it is hard on concrete and metal, and it is rough on pets and plants. Snow Shield™ is built to fix those weak spots. Every formula in the line is enhanced with CMA (calcium magnesium acetate) and rated to keep melting down to -25°F, so it keeps working through the cold snaps where rock salt quits.
- Melts colder. Rated to -25°F, well past where straight rock salt gives up.
- Easier on surfaces. Chemical Equipment Labs markets the line as safer for concrete, pets, and plants than straight rock salt or straight calcium chloride, when used as directed.
- You can see your coverage. The colored formulas show exactly where you have already spread, so you do not over-apply, waste product, or leave bare patches.
- Consistent granule. Sized medium on purpose, fine enough to start melting fast and coarse enough to punch through the ice layer and build brine.
Choose Your Color
There are really three decisions here, not five, because three of the colors are the same ice melt in different dyes. Here is the honest breakdown so you buy the right bag:
- Pink — Magnesium chloride, agricultural-based corrosion inhibitors, and sodium chloride, enhanced with CMA. This is the only Snow Shield™ formula CEL specifically describes as safer for concrete, brick pavers, and landscaping, and CEL states it greatly reduces the metal corrosion common with straight rock salt or calcium chloride. If you have hardscape, plantings, or a paver patio, buy Pink.
- Blue, Green & Orange — One shared blend: calcium chloride, potassium acetate, and sodium chloride, encapsulated with CMA. These three are the same ice melt in different dyes. Pick between them purely on which color you can see best on your surface — orange reads hardest against snow and gray asphalt, blue and green stand out on light concrete.
- White — Calcium chloride, magnesium chloride, and sodium chloride, enhanced with CMA. No dyes or pigments, so nothing colored is left behind in the residual material and nothing tracks indoors. The trade-off is that you cannot see your own coverage while you spread it.
We are not going to pretend otherwise. Per Chemical Equipment Labs' own product literature, Blue, Green, and Orange share one blend: calcium chloride, potassium acetate, and sodium chloride, encapsulated with CMA. The dye is the difference. Choose between those three on which color you can actually see on your surface, and nothing else.
Pink and White are genuinely different chemistry. Pink is magnesium chloride based with corrosion inhibitors, the hardscape formula. White is dye-free. Those are the two real decisions in the lineup.
Not Sure Which One Fits Your Surface?
Ice melt is a commitment once the pallet shows up. Before you buy full 50 lb bags, order our $10.99 Snow Shield™ Color Sample Kit: real 2-ounce samples of all five colors, filled by us from the same factory-sealed bags on this page. Spread each one on your own concrete, see the granule, check which color you can actually see, and test Pink against your pavers. Ten dollars of certainty before you commit to a season's supply.
How to Use It
- Shovel first. Clear as much snow and ice as you can. Ice melt is for the thin layer left behind, not for melting a snowbank, and you will burn through product fast if you skip this.
- Spread evenly. A light, even scatter beats a heavy pile. With the colored formulas, watch your coverage and stop when the surface is covered. More is not better.
- Give it time. Let the granules work through the ice and build brine underneath. On thick ice, a second light pass beats one heavy dump.
- Sweep up excess once melted. Removing leftover product protects your surfaces, your pets' paws, and nearby plantings.
No de-icer is completely risk-free on hardscape. To use any ice melt as safely as possible: never apply it to concrete or pavers less than one full winter old, avoid natural stone unless the stone's manufacturer approves it, keep it off metal and wood where you can, and shovel before you spread so you are treating a thin layer. For hardscape and landscaping, reach for Pink, the formula CEL builds for exactly that.
Who Buys the 50 lb Bags
- Property managers and snow crews who need a formula that keeps melting through deep cold and want the visibility color to control coverage across big lots.
- Homeowners with hardscape they paid for. A paver patio, stamped concrete, or a planted walkway deserves better than the harshest bag on the shelf. Pink is built for it.
- Anyone tired of rock salt failing at 20°F. When the forecast drops well below freezing, a -25°F-rated melt is the difference between a clear walk and a liability.
Quick Answers
How cold does Snow Shield™ work?
All five formulas are rated by the manufacturer to melt down to -25°F.
Which color melts best?
Blue, Green, and Orange are the same blend, so none of those three out-melts the others. The real choice is chemistry (Pink vs. the CMA-encapsulated trio vs. dye-free White) and which color you can see on your surface.
I have a paver patio / concrete / plants nearby. Which bag?
Pink. It is the only Snow Shield™ formula CEL specifically describes as safer for concrete, brick pavers, and landscaping, and it is built to reduce the corrosion straight rock salt and calcium chloride cause. Still follow the surface precautions above. No de-icer is risk-free on hardscape.
Will the colored bags stain or track indoors?
The dye in Blue, Green, and Orange is there so you can see coverage, and it stays visible in the residual material until it is rinsed or swept away. If tracked-in color is a concern (light carpet, a white entry, indoor pets), choose White, which has no dyes or pigments, or sweep up excess after it melts.
Is it safe for kids and pets?
Chemical Equipment Labs markets Snow Shield™ as safer for kids, pets, and the environment than straight rock salt or straight calcium chloride, and we use their word, not a stronger one. It is still a de-icing chemical: store it sealed and out of reach, sweep up excess, and wipe paws after a walk. Any ice melt sold as fully "pet safe" is being oversold.
How much does one bag cover?
Coverage depends on how thick the ice is and how heavily you apply. Spread light and even for best results. Call or text us at (856) 418-4895 with your square footage and we will help you size your order, including whether a few bags or a pallet makes more sense for your season.
How fast does it ship?
Same day on orders placed before 2 p.m. ET, straight from our New Jersey facility.
