Most ice melt is sold as one anonymous white pile in a bag, and you find out what it was after it eats your steps. Snow Shield™ splits its line into five distinct formulas from Chemical Equipment Labs, and the color tells you which one you are holding. Two things the color is doing at once:

• It identifies the chemistry. Pink is a magnesium chloride blend with agricultural corrosion inhibitors. Blue, Green, and Orange share a calcium chloride / potassium acetate / sodium chloride blend encapsulated with CMA. White is a dye-free calcium chloride, magnesium chloride, and sodium chloride blend.
• It shows you where you already spread. Per Chemical Equipment Labs, the color on the Blue, Green, and Orange bags exists so the applicator can see coverage and avoid over-applying or under-applying. On a gray parking lot at 6 a.m., that visibility is the whole point.

All five are rated by the manufacturer to melt down to -25°F, and all five ship in 50 lb bags.

What Each One Actually Is

There are really only three decisions here, not five, because three of the colors are the same ice melt. Here is the honest breakdown:

• Pink — Magnesium chloride, agricultural-based corrosion inhibitors, and sodium chloride, enhanced with CMA. This is the only Snow Shield™ formula Chemical Equipment Labs specifically describes as safer for concrete, brick pavers, and landscaping, and CEL states it greatly reduces the metal corrosion common with straight rock salt or calcium chloride. If you have hardscape, this is the one to look at first.
• Blue, Green & Orange — One shared blend: calcium chloride, potassium acetate, and sodium chloride, encapsulated with CMA. These three are the same ice melt in different dyes. Pick between them purely on which color you can see best on your surface — orange reads hardest against snow and gray asphalt, blue and green stand out on light concrete.
• White — Calcium chloride, magnesium chloride, and sodium chloride, enhanced with CMA. No dyes or pigments, so nothing colored is left behind in the residual material and nothing tracks indoors. The trade-off is that you cannot see your own coverage while you spread it.

Your 10-Minute Test

1. Spread each sample on your actual surface, outside, in daylight. A driveway apron, a section of walkway, the corner of the lot. Judge how easily you can see where the granules landed.
2. Look at the granule, not just the color. Snow Shield™ is sized as a medium granule on purpose: too fine and it dissolves on top without breaking the ice, too coarse and it punches through without dissolving into brine. Put it next to the rock salt in your garage and the difference is visible.
3. Test a small area of your ice. Sprinkle a sample on an iced patch and watch it work through. This is the fastest way to feel the difference between a pallet you will re-order and one you will regret.
4. Decide Pink vs. everything else. If you are treating a paver patio, a stamped concrete walk, or anything with plantings alongside it, Pink is the formula the manufacturer points at. Test it there first.

Which color melts best?

Blue, Green, and Orange are the same blend, so none of those three out-melts the others. All five Snow Shield™ formulas are rated by the manufacturer down to -25°F. The real choice is chemistry (Pink vs. the CMA-encapsulated trio vs. dye-free White) and visibility on your surface.

I have pavers. Which one should I test?

Start with Pink. It is the only formula Chemical Equipment Labs specifically describes as safer for concrete, brick pavers, and landscaping. That said, no de-icer is risk-free on hardscape. Never use any ice melt on concrete or pavers less than one winter old, avoid it entirely on natural stone unless the stone's manufacturer says otherwise, and shovel first so you are melting a thin layer instead of dumping product on a snowbank.

Will the colored ones stain my concrete or my dog's paws?

The dye in Blue, Green, and Orange is there so you can see your coverage, and it will be visible in the residual material until it is rinsed or swept away. If tracked-in color is a concern (light carpet, a white entry, an indoor dog), test the colored samples on your actual surface first, or go with White, which contains no dyes or pigments at all. That is exactly the kind of thing this kit is for.

Is it safe for kids and pets?

Chemical Equipment Labs markets the Snow Shield™ line as safer for kids, pets, and the environment than straight rock salt or straight calcium chloride, and we are going to use their word, not a stronger one. It is still a de-icing chemical: store it sealed and out of reach, sweep up excess, and wipe paws after a walk. Any ice melt sold as fully "pet safe" is being oversold.
